What are some of the advantages and disadvantages that translators might face while pursuing a career in translation? Also, what kind of salary can a translator expect?

That is exactly what I want to do. I'm moving to Spain, but am taking a course on Russian and want to continue living/working in Spain afterwards. I just heard the pay for translators/interpreters is crap.

There obviously many advantages and disadvantages to being a freelance translator, and it's important to take those into consideration when deciding whether or not it's right for you.
Here's some right off the top of my head:
ADVANTAGES -You can work from home (or from wherever you want) -You control your own destiny because you're your own boss -You can choose what you want to work on when you want to work on it
DISADVANTAGES -You might have to get used to the "Feast or Famine" lifestyle -You have to be a one-person show doing everything for your business -You might feel lonely not interacting with coworkers -You have to be really disciplined
In terms of salary, you pretty much can earn what you want but it will take time and effort that a lot of people aren't willing to put in.
