Advice on literature translations

by Melina
(Detroit, MI)

I am interested in becoming a translator, in the Literature field. I am bilingual, (Spanish-English, Spanish being my native language). I have a Major in Linguistics and a Minor in Spanish, and I took some translation classes in college.

Do you have any advice in how to get into this? I mean, I was thinking about contacting some publishing agencies, but I am not sure how to start.

It sounds like you have a great background to begin with, and I think it's a good idea to contact some publishing houses. I would look for ones that have had some of their books already translated into Spanish. Also, see if you have any contacts that have written books. My wife's uncle came to me one day and said that he had written a book and wanted it translated. Granted it wasn't a best seller or anything but just having that experience is well worth it.
