Most of my Spanish teachers were wrong. Ashley is Ashley, plain and simple. You can easily translate words but names are names. There are some names that have a Spanish counterpart, for example Thomas with Tomas or John with Juan. But not all do.
Another very common misnomer is when people try to say Spanish words with the sounds of English letters. For example Mexico, in Spanish the letter X has the sound of an English H. The correct pronunciation is meh-hee-ko, NOT mex-E-co.
