College Major for Translation

by Golnaz

Golnaz asked: I am not sure what college major I should study if I want to become a professional live translator. I want to get a bachelor's degree. Should I get it in communication or is there another major I could consider? Thank you for helping me.

The Spanish Translator: Thanks for the question, Golnaz. Some people think that a college education is not necessary to become a good translator, but I think that college can only help you in your path towards becoming a translation professional. Your question, then, is a good one since choosing a college major isn't something that should be taken lightly.

First let me tell you about my experience. I got my undergraduate degree in Spanish Translation and Interpretation and we learned all about the translation industry and how to become better translators. However, many colleges don't have translation programs but you shouldn't' let this deter you. I would recommend that you find something that you're interested in and major in that. Translators are better off if they have a specific area of specialization, like chemistry, computer science, finance, etc. If you major in one of these, while also majoring or minoring in a foreign language, you'll not only have good language experience, but you'll also have a good grasp on a specialized area, which will be very valuable to future translation clients.

Hope that helps, and good luck!
