The Franklin Kid 1240
Children's Talking Dictionary

The Franklin Kid 1240 children's talking dictionary is one of the best children's dictionaries around.

One of the great things about the dictionary/spell corrector is that as the name implies, it is for kids and most kids get a kick out of actually using it to study vocabulary and writing. (Which can be tough sometimes!)

First of all, the price is pretty reasonable. You can find it on Amazon cheaper than you can get it on the official Franklin website so I would look there first.

So what makes this dictionary good for kids? Well, there are a ton of features that make it great.

Vocabulary
There are over 40,000 word definitions included in the dictionary and most of these words are in the range of what a 6-10 year old child will know or learn. Also, there is a feature where you can add your own vocabulary lists to the dictionary. How is that useful? Well, say your child has weekly vocabulary tests. You just input the list into the Franklin Kid-1240 and you can use that list to study. It is so much more interactive because the computer voice speaks the words out loud and you can even use the included different level word-building games to learn additional vocabulary.

Spelling
One of the coolest features is the phonetic speller that is included. My kids love to write letters to their cousins. Well, they're just learning how to spell and a lot of times they'll spell a word phonetically. Well, what they could do to help them learn to spell correctly is type the word phonetically (say nolij) in the electronic spell corrector and the dictionary would bring back the correct word "knowledge".

Additional Features
The Franklin Kid-1240 also has an animated handwriting guide which shows how to write words in cursive. There is an included headphone jack (but no headphones) and the out cover is pretty durable which makes it ideal for kids. There is also an animated voice that will say the words out loud.

In reading the reviews on Amazon, the dictionary is also very helpful for kids with learning disabilities or those kids that don't like to study. It provides a cool, interactive way to study vocabulary which traditionally can be a boring subject to study.
