The Franklin MWD-450 Merriam-Web Dictionary
Just because the Franklin MWD-450 has Merriam-Webster's name attached to it doesn't mean it's the right handheld dictionary for you.
There are a lot of products these days that come bundled with respectable companies' third-party products. However, the Franklin MWD-450 Merriam-Web dictionary doesn't seem to live up to that description. So what makes this Franklin electronic dictionary different than other ones offered? Well... The Good One good thing about this dictionary is the price. (Is it bad that the price is the best thing about this dictionary?) You can get it new on Amazon for around $20. It's got a decent-size vocabulary (around 80,000 words) and does fit the definition of a pocket dictionary, meaning that it is smaller than other Franklin electronic dictionary products. In addition to the normal dictionary functions, it also includes a handful of word games (like Hangman), a calculator, and also a database to store things like telephone numbers. The Not-So-Good The vocabulary isn't as extensive as some of the other dictionaries and this can be frustrating at times, especially if you are looking up higher-level words. The word level is more suited to younger children as opposed to teenagers and adults. Another thing that is frustrating is that there is some lag time of about 4-8 seconds between the time you type in a word and when the definition appears. Speaking of the definitions, another thing to be aware of is that a lot of the definitions are one or two word definitions. Some people like this but others want a little more in the definition area. Verdict All in all, the Franklin MWD-450 is what it is: a cheap electronic dictionary that will be perfect for people learning English or children in elementary school. If you're looking for a dictionary will a ton of words and definitions to help you read the Wall Street Journal, you should probably be prepared to spend a bit more on a more comprehensive solution.
