Gordo
by: Jay Abels

In Argentina, gordo or gordito is commonly used for little boys. It is a compliment that indicates that they look healthy and well fed. After complimenting one baby, the mother proudly told me that he had gained a kilo each month for his first year.
Gordo may also be used for adults. Instead of calling people in a group by their names, they may be differentiated by some characteristic such as gordo for the fattest, or negro for the darkest skinned. There is no negative connotation connected with the terms.
