How can I obtain certification in translating

Summer asked: How can I obtain certification in translating other than through the American Translators Association? I'm fluent in Spanish and English and have translated before (freelance), but in order for me to get a job as a translator, I need a certificate.

The Spanish Translator: This is a great question, Summer, and one that many people have, especially as they get started in the translation industry. In the United States, the American Translators Association (ATA) is the most well-known organization for translators, and when people think of translation certification, they often think of the ATA. However, one thing that is important to remember is that there are different types of certifications available for translators. For example, the certification offered by the ATA is a certification that tests your language skills.
There are other places you can get translation certifications that are more like educational certificates for completing a series of translation courses. Clicking on this link will outline some schools that offer online translation certificates.
So if you want to get a translation certificate without having to go through ATA, then check out some of the online certificate options.
Another thing to remember, Summer, is that translation certification is not necessary to become a freelance translator. There are clients that require freelance translators to be "certified" but I have never had a client require me to be certified. I've said this before, but the most important thing for getting translation jobs is prior experience. Clients need to be educated that just because a translator has a certificate doesn't necessarily mean that he/she is a good translator.
Hope that helps, and good luck!
