How to become a translator

by Isabel Laego

I would like to know how to become a translator.

This includes: Do I have to study something first (undergraduate)?

Do I have to study in some place to be a translator?

How do i know if my level of English is enough to be a translator?

Is there a big market for translators?

If I become a translator, can I have a career or am I a professional?

Is it worth it to be a translator instead of going to regular school for 4 years?

Thank you very much for reading this. You don't have to answer all the questions. If you answer just one it would be very helpful for me.

Becoming a Translator
by: Anonymous

There are a lot of different paths you can take to become a professional translator. You might want to start by doing some volunteer translation work, then checking your translations with a teacher or professional translator.

There's not a particular major or course of study that you HAVE to study, but languages, journalism and even technical subjects can serve you well. There are a couple of posts on this page that can give you some more information. Best of luck!

Steps for becoming a translator

Those are some great questions that you asked on how to become a translator, and believe it or not, there are a lot of people that have very similar questions.

I think that while official "certification" might not be necessary to become a successful translator, having an undergraduate degree can be helpful. Having an area of specialization is one of the best things a potential translator can have, and getting a degree in something other than translation can only help you become a better translator.
