How to Improve My Spanish

by Roni
(Michigan)

Roni asked: I am interested in becoming a Spanish translator, however I speak minimal Spanish. What route would you suggest I take to prepare to become a Spanish translator?

The Spanish Translator: Great question, Roni. The most basic thing a person needs to become a Spanish translator is a good command of both Spanish and English. Without a good grasp of both languages, there is just no way that a person can be a translator.

That being said, even if you don't have the skills you need right now to become a translator, you can always improve your Spanish language skills by taking Spanish courses. Some people try to learn Spanish by themselves doing online courses, but I think that these are very difficult to obtain the proficiency you need. In order to become truly fluent, you're going to have to spend some time among native Spanish speakers. The best way to do this is to take a course overseas in a Spanish-speaking country.

You can find a list of such courses on the Spanish language schools page.

Hope this helps, and good luck!
