Interpreter Certification for Canada

by Gabriel
(Montreal)

Gabriel asked: I just moved to Canada and I am interested in finding out what type of certification is required to work in Canada as a Court or Medical Interpreter. Is there a state Certification or Federal?

The Spanish Translator: Thanks for visiting the site, Gabriel, and asking the question about interpreter certification for Canada. To be honest, I don't know much about interpretation, and even less about the requirements (if any) for interpreters to be certified in Canada. I'm sure there are rules and regulations about interpreters being certified to work in the courts.

That being said, there are some organizations you can probably contact for more information. I'd first try the Canadian Translators, Terminologists and Interpreters Council as they seem to have a handle on what it takes for certification. Another place you can also check is this list of translation schools and training programs in Canada.

Hope that helps, and good luck!
