Typical Interpreter Salaries

Potential interpreters always want to know what interpreters earn. Understanding what the going salary rate is very helpful for potential interpreters, because they can then see that interpretation can be a great source of income.

Interpreter salaries are not all the same. Different jobs pay different amounts, and even different training coupled with experience can pay differently in the end.

As I mentioned elsewhere about federal court interpreters, they receive different amounts (from $171 to $355 a day) based on previous experience and whether or not they've passed the requisite tests.

Interpreter earnings for federal court interpreters are fixed, but other court interpreters (such as on the state level and local levels) can vary from state to state or region to region.

For example, California court interpreter salaries can range anywhere from $175 to about $265 a day. Utah, however, pays interpreters anywhere between $17.50 to $36.23 an hour. A great resource with links to individual state courts, along with interpreter salaries and requirements can be found at the National Center for State Courts website.

Freelance interpreters who don't work in the federal or state court system, but rather work with businesses or with interpretation agencies ususally charge by the hour. The interpreter rate can vary a great deal based on the languages used, material being interpreted, as well as other factors. The range can fall anywhere between $20 and $150 an hour.

Finally, interpreters who work as in-house conference interpreters for large organizations can expect to receive different salaries. These also depend highly on previous experience and training.
