Techniques to Learn Spanish Slang

I mentioned earlier that it can be difficult to really learn Spanish slang by only relying on dictionaries.

In order to really learn Spanish slang and thus understand it and use it, you'll need to do some other things.

While this list is not by all means comprehensive, it will give you a good foundation to work from. I've used these techniques and my comprehension of Spanish slang has gone up tremendously.

However, just like everything else, you need to constantly practice so that you don't lose the Spanish slang that you've learned.

Here are the techniques...

1. Make friends with a native speaker
This is the single best method for learning Spanish slang. One of the things to remember, though, is that slang is different in almost every Spanish-speaking country, so if you want to learn Spanish slang from Ecuador, find someone that is from Ecuador. It only makes sense.

2. Practice your listening

    A. Another way to learn Spanish slang is to find some listening material somewhere where people are using Spanish slang. The best places for this is on TV and on the radio. TV shows in Spanish use a lot of Spanish slang phrases and idioms and are good practice.

    B. I also find that listening to the DJs on Spanish radio stations will give you a lot of exposure to slang. I listen to a great Spanish radio station here in Washington, D.C. (El Zol) and have learned quite a bit.

3. Practice using it yourself
As much as you might feel embarrassed, it's important that you try to use what you learn. Obviously, make sure you try it on someone that won't be offended if you accidently use it incorrectly and say something inappropriate.

These are the best techniques (aside from moving to another country) that I've used to improve my Spanish slang usage and hopefully they can help you learn Spanish slang as well.
