It's a word that gets its intention from the tone of the phrase.
Its use is not well seen in women, although it can happen.

WEY also said between womenNEW by: Anonymous
Wey (In Spanish güey) is used as "dude", "man", when talking to somebody who is somehow close to you like a friend, and not precisely in a negative way, It's just a way to call each other, also between women they say to each other "wey", I am woman, when I was in highschool all my girlfriends used to call each other with this word.

Guys only? by: Anonymous
I said this to a cook at my work, because I heard them call eachother it & I also heard other servers call them it as well. I'm a girl, and when I said it, even though I speak Spanish, they all laughed. And I wasn't sure why. Maybe only guys can call eachother that? And maybe cause I said gracias with it.. "Gracias guey"
But I felt really awkward when they were all laughing and I wasn't sure why.

When I dated a guy straight from Mexico, he and his brother used to call eachother guay after every sentence. I asked and he said it refers to the person as a man with no balls.

I am not totally positive but only the men say it to other men. I once heard that it was slang for "dude" in spanish. But I'm really not sure.
