Mommy as a slang term

Every time I speak to a Spanish man either in the store or at the McDonalds pay window , I am referred to as "mommy". I know what the word means in english but i'm guessing this is a slang word that spanish men use sometimes when talking to a woman. Please tell me the inferance. Is this a compliment ? Also, I am a transgender woman. Would that have anything to do with it?

Mamita
by: Anonymous

I live in Southern California and I've known people from all over latin america and what I know is, Mami can be a friendly term used to any woman in places like Honduras and Cuba. I hear Cuban women saying that to each other all the time. Hola mami, como estas?! Hi girl, how are you?! If they say mamita it's more like a sexual connotation used by men to women they are attracted to in most latin american societies.

If a man says it then it has to be in the way its said! It can be rude or sweet.
If a woman says it and usually I hear it from the woman that are from Honduras then its like "oh girl" example: "ayyy mami tu ta lokita" - " oh, girl you crazy"

mommy no...mami

mommy: mother
mami: madre

but latin men use it with women (is like a sweet thing) but very very informal tothe point that some women consider it rude if the person isnt close to you.

nothing wrong with it
