Earn an Online Translation Certificate
If you're a translator looking for "proof" of your translation ability, an online translation certificate might be the best way to go about it.
Translators don't have to be certified in order to translate, but many times, potential clients don't quite understand this and will only award translation jobs to translators that have some sort of "proof of certification."
Well, if you're a translator looking to build your client base, not having a certification might prevent you from getting some jobs you otherwise might get. So what can you do?
Nobody has extra time these days, and there's no way that most of us can drop everything we're doing to go back to school and get a translation degree or certificate when we've got a million other things that are pulling us in a million different directions. That's where an online translation certification can be the perfect solution.
Online Translation Certification
With more and more people interested in getting certified, I've put together a list of institutions that offer some sort of online translation certificate. Many of these certificates are in specific areas such as medical translation or interpretation, but there are some general purpose ones that would work.
My definition of an "online" translation certificate is one where you don't need to leave your house and can earn the certificate completely online.
So, anyway, here's the list:
- Adelphi University English/Spanish Translation Certificate
This is a nine-month long program that is conducted entirely online and according to the course description, "is taught by experienced translation professionals." The program is open to the public and students need to have a high school diploma and be fluent in both English and Spanish.
- Words Language Services
WRS offers two email correspondence courses where you communicate directly with a tutor. They offer two courses: A WLS Certificate in Translation (which focuses on commercial documents) as well as a London Institute of Linguistics Translation Diploma (with a focus on journalism and published texts). Each course can be completed in a minimum of 3 months.
- The University of Chicago Graham School of General Studies Translation Studies Certificate
This is a program that focuses on commercial, legal, and medical translation. This program isn't strictly an online course because there are three days of coursework that have to be completed in Chicago. However, once those three days are done, there is just an eight-week practicum that can be completed at home or wherever you want.
- NYU SCPS Professional Certificate in Translation
The School of Continuing & Professional Studies offers this program and allows you to build your own certificate program by choosing classes that are relevant to what you want to study or improve in with regards to your own translation progress. This course is completely online. You do have to pass a test in order to be allowed to enroll in the course.
- University of Toronto Certificate in Translation
This program is a distance-learning course that has to be completed within 18 months of starting. There are a total of four courses that have to be completed in the selected language.
Hopefully this list will make it easier for you to decide on where to go to get an online translation certificate, and have a little more validation with you when searching for those freelance (or in-house) translation jobs.
