Spanish English Translation Dictionary
I am always on the lookout for a good Spanish English translation dictionary related to computer terms because the most common request I receive for translation work is translating documents related to computers or the computing industry.
I noticed this trend a few years ago and so far it hasn't subsided, and while there might be a few obvious reasons why this is so, it took me a while to really understand why. Almost every translation I did had something to do with computers. For example, most of the high school and college transcripts I was asked to translate included multiple classes related to computer science, i.e. Introduction to Java, Programming Fundamentals, Speech Recognition, Human Computer Interaction, just to name a few. In addition, most of the translations that I did that at first glance you wouldn't have anything to do with computers, almost always turned out to have some sort of computer terminology included. Even translations I have done in the past for the website of a public library in New York have included documents related to computers. Dcouments like Computer Use Policies, Instruction for Logging on to the Library System, or Resetting Your Library Password made me realize that if I didn't have a good background in computer-related terminology, or a good Spanish English translation dictionary, I wouldn't be able to adequately translate all the documents that I was being asked to work on. A lot of people think that computer terminolgy in Spanish - Eglish glossaries and dictionaries is only going to be limited to words that most of us don't deal with on a regular basis, but that is an incorrect assumption. Sure there are computer-related words that I've never used in my Spanish translations (chipset, anyone), but there are plenty of words that are important to know which are included. If you don't live in a Spanish-speaking country, or don't interact very often with Spanish-speaking computer users, you won't realize until it's too late that there are in fact a lot of computer terms that a professional Spanish translator should have as part of his or her vocabulary. If you don't have this background knowledge already, I've included below some free online Spanish dictionaries and glossaries related to computer terminology. Some are more technical than others, and you might not need to know all the words in every online dictionary, but they will give you a solid foundation that every translator needs to better understand how to better translate this digital world. And, please, if you know of a resource that I don't know about, please take the time to include a link to it in the boxes below. Translators should help each other out, and this is a great way to spread the translator love. Thanks! Spanish English Translation DictionaryTechnical English-Spanish Vocabulary This is a fairly well put-together glossary of technical terms. However, "technical terms" is a little general, so while you'll find some great generalized vocabulary, you might not get the specific words you're looking for. It's still a pretty good computer-related resource, though. English-Spanish Dictionary of Common Computing Terms This is a pretty small dictionary of computer terms from the Queen Mary University of London. Diccionario de Términos Informáticos This is a Spanish-only glossary of some basic IT terms. Basic Spanish - English Glossary for Internet Users Rafael Calvo put together this glossary of basic Internet terms, which was last updated in 2001. While it is a pretty decent glossary, it's important to remember that Internet terminology changes pretty often, so a lot of these words might not be used very much now. Vocabulario de Ordenadores e Internet A somewhat eclectic compilation of Spanish computer vocabulary, this glossary was last updated in 2003.
