A review of the Oxford Spanish picture dictionary

The Oxford Spanish picture dictionary is a great dictionary.

If you don't already have one, I strongly suggest investing in one as a tool to increase your Spanish vocabulary, as well as a way to learn specialized terms.

This Spanish picture dictionary (whose official title is The Oxford-Duden Pictorial Spanish and English Dictionary) is published by Oxford University of Press and is a great Spanish resource to have in your collection.

The dictionary, set up differently than conventional dictionaries, has nearly 30,000 terms in each language. According to the book description listed on Amazon.com, this English Spanish picture dictionary...

  • presents a list of vocabulary relating to a subject together with a picture illustrating that subject
  • double-page spreads link the words by number to the picture situation drawn from everyday life
  • has 384 sections that cover a broad range of subjects in the fields of science, medicine, technology, industry, commerce, and arts and leisure, including astronomy, automobiles, swimming, supermarkets, nuclear energy, nightclubs, and much more
  • presents both English and foreign words on the same page for easy use
  • provides fully alphabetized indices in both languages which refer the reader not only to the various subjects and contexts in which a word is used, but also to the correct translation and vocabulary of the entire subject

The dictionary is almost 900 pages long and I love it because it's got so much vocabulary arranged in a way that makes it not only fun to study, but easier to remember, because of the pictures.
