Spanish Translation Website
Food Industry Specific Terminology

The very first paid translation I ever did (without the aid of any Spanish translation website aids) was for a food processing plant that made beef jerky and other foods with long shelf lives. Before I had gotten the job translating food labels, Standard Operating Procedures, and other Spanish aids, I never really knew thought about translators being needed to translate in the food industry.

However, the food industry is a very ripe market for translation professionals (excuse the pun!) and as such there are lots of opportunities for not only translators, but interpreters as well, to make some money.

So where can you find these food industry translation jobs?

In my case, I did English-Spanish translations for various divisions of the company. For example, I mentioned that I translated food labels. The company was interestd in expanding their line of products to Latin America and needed the labels on the food translated. This entailed knowing (or finding) the right translations of various ingredients, some of which were easier to translate than others.

In addition, to translating labels, the company asked me to translate their SOPs, or Standard Operating Procedures, which was essentially a booklet outlining the correct procedures for doing the different tasks in the manufacturing plant. The company employed a large amount of Spanish-speakers, and it was important that they understood not only the proper way to use the equipment, but also how to care for and dispose of the different types of hazardous equipment and chemicals used in the various processes.

So it's easy to see from even just this small example how many areas there are in the food industry where Spanish translators are needed.

In an effort to help those of you interested in expanding your translation skillset, I've put together a list of free online Spanish translation website resources (mainly glossaries and dictionaries) specifically related to the food industry. Hopefully these will help give you the confidence to learn more about this area and use your translation abilities to receive even more translation jobs.

As always, if you know of more resources that aren't listed here, please help out your fellow translator by scrolling to the bottom of this page and adding a link to the Spanish translation website glossary or dictionary in the boxes provided.

Thanks!

Free Online Spanish Glossaries for the Food Industry

Spanish English Bilingual Food Glossary
This is a fairly comprehensive food glossary. The only thing I don't like is that you have to click on each letter to go to a list of food that begins with that letter, and there is no search function.

Spanish Food Dictionary and Glossary
Provided by www.gomadrid.com, this glossary is searchable.

Spanish/English Food Terms Glossary
This glossary of food terms in Spanish and English is divided into categories.

Mexican Spanish <> English Food Lexicon
This food terminology is about 35 pages of terms used in Mexico for various foods. If you're looking for translations specific to Mexico, this is a good place to start.

Food and Cooking Terms
I like this glossary of food and cooking related terms because it is fairly extensive. You'll find a lot of words that you wouldn't normally run across.
