Translation of Fijate
by: Anonymous

It's not slang. The Spanish verb "fijarse" means to notice something. When used in a command form like "Fijate" it means, "Check it out" Also common is the expresion "Fijate que no" which means, "No, not really." or "Come to think of it, no."

Check this
by: Anonymous

Usually this is used in most latin american societies as a way to say, watch this or check this. Like if I were to say, "fijate, los precios son mas alto hoy dia". "check it out, the prices are higher today".

fijate is literally "fix yourself on"

It is often used (at least in Spain) when something is hard to believe. One will say "fijate en ..." and that will mean, roughly "think about that," or "imagine that."
