Tips on Choosing the Right Company for Telephone Interpretations

There are a bunch of companies all over the world that all offer services providing telephone interpretations. At first glance, most of the companies seem to offer the same services at the same rates and with the same conditions. However, there are a few thing you should be aware of when narrowing down your choices.

1. Pricing - What is the pricing structure? Does the company charge by minute or by hour? Most companies charge between $1 and $3, depending on the language and the destination, along with a connection fee. Will you be using the telephone interpretations services frequently? If so, many companies offer special discounts for higher call volume.

2. Agreements - Many companies require you to fill out and sign a service agreement before they agree to interpret for you.

3. Confidentiality - You absolutely must be certain that the interpreters for the company are all bound be confidentially agreements. It wouldn't be too much to even request one in writing be sent to you for your records.

4. Stability - This goes without saying, but it's important that the company have a stable telephony system in place.

5. Proper Training - Make sure the interpreters are trained in whatever area you will need their services for. If you're in the medical profession, the interpreter should be trained in medical terminology, for example.

6. Interpretation Types - Does the company offer spontaneous interpretation services or do you have to schedule the interpretation session in advance? If they do offer spontaneous telephone interpretations, how long is the lag time between the time you call and and interpreter is available?

7. Hours of availability - Are they capable of taking calls 24/7?

8. Equipment - What kind of equipment do the interpreters use? Hand-held phones can cause problems when the interpreter needs to take notes. Hands-free headsets are more convenient and better for both the client and interpreter.
