The word 'Miyate' was used in our home growing up. It refer to African Americans. When asked,my Mother told us it meant 'BLACK BUG'. My Mother NEVER used derogatory words (I was smacked for saying Hell). It was NOT until I worked in PRISON and was told by my Supervisor NOT to use THAT WORD, he informed me that it was a derogatory term.My black friends laugh because I use the "N" Word like nothing.I was RAISED in WATTS!!!
A word becomes DEROGATORY only when the user makes it one! As far as Whoopi wearing that Babeball Shirt in Jumping Jack Flash (I noticed it on my second viewing) with MIYATE across the front.....Whoopi is up on EVERYTHING!!! I am SURE she knew, THAT is exactly why she wore it!!!She is a Comidian!!!!

I just saw the movie Jumping Jack Flash again and didn't realize this before, but there is a scene where Ms Goldberd wears a jump suit and the word is printed across her shirt...I wonder if she knew this at the time she made the movie. It is a very ugly word, one that does not seem to fit in the movie, or anywhere else.
