Use Craigslist to find translation jobs

For translators, finding translation jobs can be a hard thing to do day in and day out.

Many translators pick one method of finding new clients and stick with it, without realizing that there are other ways to find translator jobs.

In all my time I've spent as a translator, one thing I've realized is that if you're not actively looking for new ways to find freelance translation jobs, you won't last long in the business.

So what are some of the ways translators find clients? Well, probably the most common way is registering with translation agencies. This is a very good method for translators (and if you're interested, be sure to check out the Freelance Translator's Ultimate List of Translation Agencies).

There's another method you might be interested in checking out, though, I call this method the Craigslist method because (obviously) you use Craigslist in conjunction with Google.

The good thing about Craigslist is that there is a jobs section for each city where employers can post classified job opportunities. The bad thing is that it would take nearly forever to search through all the cities one by one since there is no way to search through all cities from the Craigslist website.

Here's where Google search comes in to play.

What's good about Google (and probably other search engines) is that you can limit your search to a specific domain.

First of all, type your search term in the first box at the top of the page. I usually type in terms like "translation" or "translator."

Next, go to the advanced search options from the Google home page and go down to the Domain option.

In the space provided, type in craigslist.com. What this does is limit your search to pages found on the Craigslist domain.

Hit the search button and you'll (hopefully) get some search results. Another good thing about Craigslist is that listings can't be on the site forever, so you'll get fairly recent postings.

So while this method doesn't necessarily compete with registering with translation agencies, it is another method to keep in the back of your mind for finding translation jobs.
