Two more Spanish translation myths

by Sarah
(Oklahoma, USA)

-Just because they know the words does NOT mean they can speak like a native or even pronounce the words at all. Knowing the words and knowing how to say the words are two different things.

-Not all translators translate word for word. Sometimes translators may change what they are translating to avoid a cultural faux pas or if you get a bad translator, to further their own goals.

translation myths

Both good points, Sara. I would never consider myself a native Spanish speaker, although there have been times when my Spanish vocabulary has been better than a native speaker I was talking with. Still, I would not consider myself native. Also, word-for-word translations aren't usually done most of the time and you are right in that things like cultural nuances usually don't allow that to happen.
