what does chapilin mean

a buddy of mine from Santiago sometimes uses the term chapilin refering to himself or sometimes to me. I gather that is is endearing but I would appreciate a fuller explaination. I haven't heard this in cuba, mexico or central america...I wonder if it's typically Chilean? |
