What does the term "ee-kquay-la" mean in English?

by Leslie Copeland
(Bellingham, WA)

What does the term "ee-kquay-la" mean in English? I picked up this phrase in Socorro, New Mexico and although I say it all the time, I still don't literally know what it means! Or even how to spell it.

It's really "Hijo é la"
by: From Socorro

The correct spelling is "Hijo é la," it's a short form of "Hijo de la Chingada" or basically "son of a bitch." It's a pretty mild expression of frustration like "oh my god." For example one of my coworkers, an Albuquerque native, used it just the other day in a sarcastic way... and we work in IT support so you get the idea.

Just a note, I like how the Socorro accent translated in your spelling :) I've lived all around New Mexico but having grown up in Socorro I can say our accent in the middle/lower Rio Grande Valley is definitely pretty distinct.

Not sure of spelling myself. lol!
by: Anonymous

Not sure how to spell it correctly myself but meaning is similar to "oh wow!", to "serious?", depending on how you use it and the way you say it.
Like "Que la chingada!" but with less words so to speak. LOL!
Que la chingada! means= "What the hell!"
