An overview of the
Yahoo Spanish English dictionary

Have you ever checked out the Yahoo Spanish English dictionary?

Most search engines either have online dictionaries or translators you can access from their pages. What is interesting to me, though, is that most have decided that they will have one or the other, and not necessarily both.

Take Google for instance. They only offer an online translator. They don't have an online dictionary that they promote. However, they are more of a strict search engine, rather than a directory.

Altavista on the other hand, is both a search and a directory and only has an online translator.

Yahoo, for its part, doesn't offer an online translator like the other search engines, but rather provides a Yahoo Spanish English dictionary that Internet users can use for free. This online Spanish English dictionary is none other than the American Heritage Spanish Dictionary: Spanish/English, Inglés/Español.

This online Spanish English dictionary by Houghton Mifflin has about 70,000 entries, consisting of over 120,000 meanings and, according to the site, "is newly revised to include the most current computer, telecommunications, and Internet vocabulary and...include[s] pronunciations in both English and Spanish." It also uses American English and Latin American Spanish.

Included with the online version of the dictionary are guides both in English and Spanish that contain valuable information for those interested in the study of either language. These guides not only include notes on grammar and usage, but also contain verb tables, numerals, weights, and measures, common abbreviations, and orthography and pronunciation information.

I looked up a relatively easy word, hypertext and below is the screenshot:

The dictionary shows the pronunciation as well as the words that come directly before and after, as well as the fact that this word is related to computadoras

All in all, it seems that this Yahoo Spanish English dictionary is a fairly good one and could be a useful resource to add to your online translation repertoire. You can find this dictionary in the Yahoo Spanish English Dictionary (Yahoo! Education Reference) section.
